Why we are building this
Dubai has more retail per person than almost anywhere, which is exactly why it is so hard to work out where the cheap version of a thing is. This guide is about the second question: not where to shop, but where to shop when the budget is a student's.
02 The plan
What shopping will include
- Stores that take a student ID Clothing, tech, stationery and sport, with the discount amount and what proof is needed at the till.
- Everyday essentials, ranked by price Supermarkets, pharmacies and household basics compared honestly, including the ones nobody puts in a city guide.
- Kitting out a room Furniture, bedding, kitchen and desk setup for a first apartment or dorm, with a realistic total.
- Markets and outlets The souks, outlet malls and warehouse sales worth the metro fare, and when they are actually worth going.

How it will work
- Step 1 Search by what you need Start from the thing, not the mall, so you are not walking four floors to compare two shops.
- Step 2 Check the student rate Every listing states the discount, the proof required and whether it stacks with a sale.
- Step 3 Get told when it changes Seasonal sales and student weeks get flagged before they end, not after.
Where it actually stands
Nothing here is built. It is on the list because it is one of the most common questions we get from students in their first month, and there is no good answer to it anywhere online right now.

See what already worksA number of clothing, tech and stationery retailers run student rates in the UAE, usually between 10 and 20 per cent, and most require a valid university ID or a verified student email at the point of sale. The catch is that they are almost never advertised in store, so you have to know to ask.
Our listings will name the store, the discount and the proof it needs, and only include offers confirmed with the retailer.
Away from the large destination malls. Neighbourhood supermarkets, the hypermarkets on the city's edge and the older market areas are consistently cheaper for food, household goods and basics, and several are on the metro. The guide will compare them on real prices rather than reputation.
Not yet. The places-to-go directory on the site covers where to go in Dubai today, and shopping listings with student pricing are a separate dataset still being built.
